A new wave of activities on data mobilisation, data portals, and different sides of biodiversity informatics arose in Russia some 5 years ago. However, Russia remains still a massive gap in the open access global biodiversity systems. Nevertheless, some projects were successfully implemented to mobilise national data using international biodiversity data standards and modern technologies.
These proceedings are comprised of conference papers of the III National Scientific Conference with international participation “Information Technology in Biodiversity Research” (ISSN 2738-7410), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Academician Pavel Gorchakovskii (https://insma.urfu.ru/en/research/itbio), 5–10 October 2020, Ekaterinburg, Russia. Articles presented in the collection were reviewed and selected by the editors of this volume. They represent valuable contributions to the current development and achievements in biodiversity informatics research in Russia.
The conference became a traditional meeting point for Russian biologists interested in biodiversity informatics. The conference topics are:
- Global biodiversity portals: data integration and data use for scientific research
- Biodiversity data mobilization in Russia: databases and information systems development experience
- Digitization of Russian natural history collections: current state and prospects
- Biodiversity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and methods of their analyses
- GIS technologies application and remote sensing data use for biodiversity research.
The conference series aims at promoting innovations in biodiversity information science, sharing biodiversity data management practices, and enhancing of Russian biodiversity informatics community.
